NAILED IT!: GERMAN MAGAZINE DER SPIEGEL’S UNCANNILY PREDICTIVE COVERS OF TRUMP AND THE WASHINGTON CAPITOL RIOT!

Like many news magazines around the world, the highly-respected weekly German news magazine Der Spiegal has over the past five years devoted a number of its magazine covers to images, illustrations and cartoons depicting Donald Trump in the context of political news and the state of current events at the time. The magazine has set up an online archival gallery of these Trump covers.

One of these covers is striking in how apt and uncannily, metaphorically prescient it seems in light of the violent, destructive mob assault and breach of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., this past Wednesday. The cover illustration shows Trump sitting at his White House Office desk holding a lit match, while outside and visible through the windows behind him, a full-scale riot appears to be in progress. The implication is that he has ignited the chaos.

That cover was from a June 6, 2020, issue of the magazine and created in the context of both Trump’s ongoing inflammatory and divisive rhetoric, as well as the frequent racial-injustice and Black Lives Matter protests that were occurring in the U.S. in the wake of the illegal police murder of George Floyd. The cover image so perfectly captures the essence of Trump’s chaotic, incendiary and ultimately destructive presidency. It’s a magazine cover for the history books — an image for the ages.
