CALIFORNICATION!: THE SURF-INSPIRED ART OF DJ JAVIER!

One could draw a Venn diagram with one circle for artists, designers, musicians, actors, and all manner of creators, and the other circle for surfers, and there would be a healthy overlap of the two. (Among some well-known visual artists who are surfers are Barry McGee, Catherine Opie, and Alex Israel, to name but three.) Within the overlap, a smaller area would represent those creators whose work is directly inspired by surfing itself. Such is the case with Santa Barbara, California artist and illustrator DJ Javier. The esteemed Surfer’s Journal magazine devotes a feature article about Javier in its current issue and showcases his artwork. Javier’s images reflect his experience with surfing and surf culture, as well as his Filipino heritage and the Chicano milieu that he was exposed to growing up in Southern California.
