We made a stop at Sur Coffee over the past weekend. It’s a cafe with a roastery in San Clemente, the small, beautiful beach city built on the rolling slopes of a mountain that descends down to a scenic stretch of southern California beach. We were passing through town on our way home after a day of surfing at nearby San Onofre. Now we were looking for caffeinated sustenance to perk us up for the long drive back to Los Angeles. We were happy to see that Sur was open for business in spite of the impacts from the coronavirus shutdown.
We donned our face mask and entered the cafe to grab a coffee and check out the beautiful, minimalist space. Although we could go inside the cafe to place and pick up an order, we had to take our drinks outside due to COVID-safety and social-distancing rules. But we still had enough time to check out the beautiful espresso bar and seating area and take a few pix (see below) while we waited for our cappuccinos to get made.
Sur Coffee opened in February. San Clemente, as wonderful a town as it is with many fine restaurants, lacked a decent third-wave coffee place. Sur was a long overdue addition to the town’s food scene. But after a month in business, it had to shut down in March due to the pandemic. We’re so happy it’s open again. The coffee is great.
