CONTEMPORARY ART ON VIEW: ARTIST RAY DUNLAP’S DEEPLY PERSONAL VISUAL CHRONICLES OF AN INTER-GALACTIC DREAM TIME!

“Diary of an Abductee” is the title of artist Ray Dunlap‘s latest solo exhibition currently on view at the East Corridor Gallery at Sabine Street Studios in Houston, Texas. The collection of paintings in this show reflect a marked expansion of Dunlap’s visual vocabulary. His abstractions are layered with haunted faces and figures, foggy forms, and handwritten texts, sometimes in an antiquated, elegant cursive, sometimes in child-like scrawls. These paintings drive deeply into complex territory. So much so that it makes much of Dunlap’s previous body of work seem as if it had only begun to scratch the surface of some greater story. The work is alive with painfully glorious personal richness. These paintings tell vivid tales like some secretive Homerian odyssey finally revealed and urgently documented. The artwork draws inspiration from Dunlap’s dreams of myriad extra-terrestrial encounters. “Diary of an Abductee” represents Dunlap’s strongest, most compelling and aesthetically engaging work to date. If you’re in the Houston area, check it out.

“Diary of an Abductee” is on view through Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at the East Corridor Gallery at Sabine Street Studios at the Sawyers Yards in Houston, Texas.
