We’ve been closely following the 2014 FIFA World Cup matches through every stage of the competition in Brazil for the past month, which culminated with Germany beating Argentina 1-0 in the dramatic final in Rio Sunday. After such major global sporting events, it’s always fun to see how various media cover the big story, especially in countries of the winning and losing teams. On Mashable, there’s an excellent sampling of front pages from various German newspapers reporting news of Germany’s World Cup victory, as well as a couple of Argentine newspapers. World Cup Meme du Jour … Mexico Team Manager’s Explosive Reaction

The World Cup has a meme. As U.K. newspaper the Guardian has pointed out, the explosive celebrations of Miguel Herrera have gone viral. As the manager of the Mexican national football ( soccer ) team, Herrera presided over a well-deserved 3-1 win over Croatia in the final group stage match in Brazil. As the picture from the Guardian article and Vine clip below attest, Herrera is prone to intense facial expressions and joyous sideline celebrations that are perfect fodder for the Interwebs meme machine.

On the Scene … TV Reporter and Crowd in Milan, Italy

We’ve been in Milan, Italy, for a few days where we made time to join the crowd of thousands at Piazza Castello to watch the Italy v Costa Rica World Cup football ( soccer ) match on a big outdoor television screen. Pictured below, an Italian TV journalist does a live report from the scene. Sadly for supporters of the azzuri, Italia lost the match, but that didn’t stop the crowd from enjoying the party atmosphere.

Andy Warhol’s Portrait of Brazilian Soccer Legend Pele

In the late 1970s, the artist and pop-art superstar Andy Warhol created a series of iconic famous celebrity silkscreen portraits, including this rarely seen painting of Brazilian soccer legend Pele. This Warhol artwork is currently on view at LACMA in Los Angeles as part of an exhibition called the “Futbol: The Beautiful Game”
