We — and possibly you, too — are a big fan of large coffee-table art books by the likes of publishers Taschen, Phaidon and Rizzoli, to name but a few. Among our favorite stack of these large tomes is a book by a lesser-known German publisher. It’s a book of photographs by the artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss titled “800 Views of Airports.” And that’s exactly what you get, literally 800 photos taken in airports by the artists over several decades of international air travel. There’s no accompanying text, no explanations, no captions. Just photographs of airports, airplanes, tarmac vehicles, control towers and views looking out of windows from air-terminal boarding lounges around the globe. The book is a mesmerizing document of the airport’s cultural landscape. For those who have traveled widely and often by air, the images in this book may feel in their own way comforting.
In the past week or so, artist Dylan Egon has been putting up these awesome, cheekily sinister wheat-paste street art cut-outs of Disney’s iconic Mickey Mouse character as a gun target around downtown Manhattan. Pictured here is a super-fresh street art wheat-paste illustrated image of a boy with a Kalashnikov automatic rifle by artist “Teacake” on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side. As we’ve mentioned in previous postings over the past year or so, the short stretch of Ludlow Street just south of Grand Street is gradually evolving into a fertile “street art gallery.” It’s perfectly suited as a canvas for street art given that on each side of the street is a window-less, door-less 20-meter-long wall, sides of a buildings that face each other.
Santa Cruz, California-based artist Robert Larson creates awesome abstract geometric-patterns on his large canvases using pieces of discarded Malboro cigarette pack boxes he has scavenged as his material. His artwork pictured below was recently exhibited at Volta NYC 2014 in New York City. There’s a good interview on Eyebuzz from a few years a go in which Larson explains how his idea for using cigarette packs as material came to him as he was exploring urban, industrial landscapes and looking for old, distressed metal and wood.
