In Tokyo … Tiny A.P.C. Storefront in Daikanyama

20130906-152929.jpg

The French clothing label A.P.C. is one of our all-time favorite style brands, and we’ve been buying shirts, sweaters and jeans at their shops in Paris, New York, Osaka and Tokyo for many years while on our travels and living abroad. While A.P.C.’s retail presence in the U.S. and even is native France is relatively small, the company has many boutiques big and small throughout Japan’s major cities. This one pictured here is in the chic Tokyo neighborhood of Daikanyama, tucked between Shibuya and Naka-Meguro. It’s a tiny storefront and shop space, but it has this beautiful, minimalist style than manages to fit right into the neighborhood’s quiet ambiance and human-sized architectural scale. It’s also incorporated some leafy greenery into the space. And it’s totally “on brand.”

Fresh Street Art by FKDL in New York

It’s really great to see some fresh street art from Franck Duval, a.k.a., FKDL, in New York City. It’s been a long time since we saw new work from the Paris-based artist in downtown NYC. For a while a few years ago, FKDL’s graphical wheat-paste images of glamourous women were popping up everywhere in Lower Manhattan.  This artwork is on Elizabeth Street in the Nolita / Lower East Side interzone.

JR’s Giant Eye in Brooklyn

Here’s another one of those massive “eye” wheat-paste street art pieces by the French artist JR. This one is on the side of a lofts apartment building next to the Williamsburg Bridge, in the Willamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The placement of the artwork near the busy bridge ensures that a lot of people will see the eye, including the millions of passengers annually who ride the J/Z subway trains that pass over the bridge every few minutes. There’s a lot of new work by JR in New York City recently.

Creepy “Linda, 2012” by Daniel Firman

Photos below of French artist Daniel Firman‘s life-size, realistic and sublime if slightly creepy sculpture of a woman with her head covered leaning against a wall. The artwork is titled “Linda, 2012,” and was recently sold by the Galerie Perrotin for $32,500 at the Frieze Art Fair NY.

Eye by JR in SoHo … New York Street Art

We really love this large piece of wheat-paste street art by the intensely prolific and ambitious French artist JR. An extension of his global Inside Out Project, the eye is a recurring image of JR’s work and his various projects. Usually his street artworks show a pair of eyes, but this one is just a single eye. This one is on Thompson Street near Grand Street in SoHo, in downtown New York.

Classic Tintin Poster

Classic framed poster for Les Aventures de Tintin for the “Au Pays des Soviets” edition of the comic book series by Belgian author Herge (a.k.a, Georges Remi). This poster is in the bathroom of the Belgian restaurant Petite Abeille in Tribeca, in New York City. The entire restaurant is decorated with Tintin artwork and dozens upon dozens of Tintin comic books in French are in stacks at the bar.
