Vignelli was one of the world’s foremost designers, and in a career that started in Italy, where he was educated, and saw him immigrate to New York and start his own firm, Vignelli created an enduring vision and legacy of work that influenced several generations of leading designers, architects and creators.
The New York City subway map below is a design classic and a testament to his vision and style. Created by Vignelli in 1973, it became an iconic example of information design that would be copied the world over.
In the past week or so, artist Dylan Egon has been putting up these awesome, cheekily sinister wheat-paste street art cut-outs of Disney’s iconic Mickey Mouse character as a gun target around downtown Manhattan. The one pictured here is on Broome Street in SoHo. Absolutely brilliant.
We recently visited the South Beach, Miami studios of artist-designer Laz Ojalde and took pictures of the space and his work, which includes these lights and objet. Ojalde runs a separate design studio called LMNOQ and has developed an aesthetic around sustainable, minimalist furniture design and art pieces. Super dope stuff.
The clothing store Tenue de Nimes is among Amsterdam’s most influential purveyors of denim, clothing and style, if not its foremost. The shop reliably stocks an impeccably curated selection of well-made clothing, jeans, shoes and accessories, including a lot of limited edition items. The shop also publishes a popular tabloid-format magazine on newsprint called Journal de Nimes and recently delivered edition No. 9 of the magazine in English marking their 5th anniversary. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this issue of Journal de Nimes provides a Best Of list of the owners’ favorite places in Amsterdam to eat, drink, find culture and even get tattoos. Other highlights are an interview with Yuki Matsuda (of brands Yukaten and Monitaly) and a visit to a Japanese textile-making workshop.
At the current 10-year anniversary exhibition at the Mori Art Museum at Roppongi Hills, in Tokyo, a gallery was devoted to a mini-retrospective of the futuristic, thought-provoking design and style of cult Japanese fashion brand Final Home.
A Bathing Ape (or BAPE), the global Japanese clothing and lifestyle brand started by creator and Tokyo music producer Nigo, is twenty years old. To mark this milestone, there’s an anniversary exhibition of Bathing Ape design and classic artifacts at Daikanyama T-Site, the super-architecturally stylish and utopian Tsutaya-Starbucks shopping complex in Tokyo’s Shibuya.
