CAPITALISM 101: STRANGER THINGS APPAREL SPOTTED IN THE WILD

Have you binge watched season two of Stranger Things? If you have then you know how good it is. Some are saying it’s better than season one. Go figure.

We admit we’ve already seen all of season two of the Netflix original series. It lives up to the hype. Yes, that’s right, savvy reader, it’s still “critically acclaimed”! 

Given its critical and popular success, there’s probably going to be a third season. (Netflix doesn’t share viewer numbers and the show is commercial-free so in audience and dollars terms we don’t really know how successful it is.)

But no matter. As long as current subscribers don’t cancel there Netflix accounts, it’s as a good as a hit.

In the meantime, fans of the show can slake their thirst for more by browsing or purchasing some Stranger Things apparel. There’s a whole line of clothing already available at Target stores in the U.S.

We spied some choice ST threads being worn by a “creative type” at an ad agency’s office in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and we experienced something of a momentary catharsis. Suddenly we were seized with a burning desire to run to the nearest Target and pick up some ST fashion for ourselves.

Oh, my god! What’s happening? What’s wrong with us?

Fortunately we got an urgent text that our 10:00am status meeting was cancelled and the spell was broken. We took hold of our senses and got on with our day. But after that moment, nothing quite felt right for the rest of the day.

Like the Demogorgon of the Upside-down World in Stranger Things, lurking beneath the surface, our most base pop-cultural consumer and fashion impulses lie ever present and ready to ensnare us. We are not safe.

Hollywood capitalism is as work here, savvy reader. And why not? Why wouldn’t it be under the circumstances. Licensing and selling ST merch is an invitation to print money. There is much we can learn here.

The “Don’t F*** It Up” T-Shirt

Awesome dude Hiroshi shows off his “Don’t Fuck It Up” graphical t-shirt at the rooftop BBQ party in New York York City this past weekend. It was one of the fashion-style highlights of the evening. Love it.

Mural by Korean Artist Yoon Hyup at Rag & Bone NYC

Korean artist Yoon Hyup recently had a mural on the wall at the Rag & Bone Jean flagship store in Nolita, in downtown New York City. Rag & Bone has devoted the wall on the Elizabeth Street-side of its shop to showcasing art, with artists putting up new work every two or three weeks. Love it.

Design & Style … “Journal de Nimes” in Amsterdam

The clothing store Tenue de Nimes is among Amsterdam’s most influential purveyors of denim, clothing and style, if not its foremost. The shop reliably stocks an impeccably curated selection of well-made clothing, jeans, shoes and accessories, including a lot of limited edition items. The shop also publishes a popular tabloid-format magazine on newsprint called Journal de Nimes and recently delivered edition No. 9 of the magazine in English marking their 5th anniversary. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this issue of Journal de Nimes provides a Best Of list of the owners’ favorite places in Amsterdam to eat, drink, find culture and even get tattoos. Other highlights are an interview with Yuki Matsuda (of brands Yukaten and Monitaly) and a visit to a Japanese textile-making workshop.

Style NYC … Our Friend S. Shows Off Her “Universal Studios Florida” Graphic Tee …

While on the way to the gym, we recently ran into our friend and regular style-insider Susanita at the La Colombe in New York City’s NoHo, where she recently showed off her authentic Universal Studios Florida graphic tee featuring the classic 1980’s movie icon E.T.

At Saturdays Surf in Tokyo

The spacious Saturdays Surf store (pix below) in the fashionable border strip between Tokyo’s uber-hip Daikanyama and Naka-Meguro neighborhoods is a carbon copy of its New York City original in terms of winning retail branding concept: Espresso bar and a collection of over-priced surfboards at the front of the shop and an inviting wood-decked outdoor patio behind the store. Between the two sections is the merch, that wonderful collection of aspirational surfer-inspired fashion and accessories that punters must walk through when they take their freshly brewed Americanos out back. It’s a kind of exit-through-the-gift-shop tactic but even better ’cause the customer has to walk through the store twice even if they’ve just come to enjoy a cup of espresso on the back patio. The clothes are well made, there’s cool selection of Van’s and tees, and even a curated collection of surfer photography books and videos. And there’s actual surfing gear like board shorts, fins and wax for sale, too.

In terms of style, the interior of SS Tokyo is a stand-alone building with fresh, clean lines and a Malibu contemporary feel, whereas the NYC flagship on SoHo’s Crosby Street is cozy and crammed into a long, narrow, old-school brick-and-mortar tenement (espresso bar at front, outdoor patio in the back, dubbed “The Backyard”), albeit with that SS arty-urban-surfer-dreams-of-Bondi Beach aesthetic indelibly stamped on the interior. Props to Tokyo for getting Kurtis Kulig, the “Love Me” dude, to write that ubiquitous graffiti meme on the wall behind the espresso bar. In any case, if you’ve got the time, the Tokyo SS is worth a visit, if even for a coffee and the relaxing patio deck and its view of laidback Naka-Meguro. The clothes are super dope, too. Hier sind einige Bilder des Samstags Surf Shop in der Nachbarschaft zwischen Daikanyama und Naka-Meguro, in Tokio. Das Innere des Ladens ist schön, gut-design. Das Store-Konzept basiert auf dem ursprünglichen Konzept, das an der New York City samstags Surf Shop gestartet beruhte. Our Skull & Bones Denim Espadrilles

Now that we’re finally getting some real summer weather here in New York City, we’ve busted out a pair of denim espadrilles with an awesome skull-and-bones sewn into each shoe. The skulls are wearing hats, though — look closely — and you’ll notice that the hats are different for the left and right shoes: the left-foot shoe’s skull has a bowler hat, the right has a top hat. We bought these a few weeks ago at a super awesome select shop in Amsterdam’s Jordaan neighborhood called Tenue De Nimes.
