SIDE HUSTLES: WE LIKE TO SKETCH

Yes, it’s true, savvy reader. Sometimes we here at Global Graphica like to pick up a pen, pencil or, preferably, a Sharpie and make little drawings of things, everyday objects, people, faces, and so on. We have a habit of making sketches of surfboards and surfers riding waves, as in the example pictured here. And we do so in our Moleskine notebook or on any available paper surface. In the case of the surfer in the sketch above, we drew that on a paper tablecloth while dining out and killing time as we waited for post-dinner dessert to arrive.

Trouble in Paradise: Street Art in Honolulu

We found this street art on a local newspaper box in the kinda gritty, kinda hipster Kaimuki neighborhood of Honolulu. It’s a further sign of continuing gentrification of this drab suburban patch on Oahu’s south shore. Truly, there’s trouble brewing in paradise. The opening of more high-quality third-wave expresso bars is only going to accelerate.

Abstract Street Art on Roller Shutter … Naka-Meguro, Tokyo

The Naka-Meguro neighborhood of Tokyo has a distinct feel. It occupies one side of a steeply sloped hill and the expanse of flats bisected by a creek between Daikanyama and Meguro. It’s fashionable in a moneyed-but-hip, indie way, a place where successful creative professionals have settled and where street art is baked into the landscape around every turn.

On the Scene … “H-Edge” by Cecil Balmond at the Ferragamo Museum

“H-Edge” is a super cool stainless steel sculpture by British-based designer Cecil Balmond installed a few days ago in the piazza in front of the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum and flagship store in Florence (Firenze), Italy. The artwork is part of an exhibition with the Ferragamo, and its installation coincides with a number of art events and the Pitti Uomo mens fashion trade show in Firenze the same week.

What’s Outside the Window? – Vol. 32

friends-couple-gugging-orhcard-street-lower-east-side-les-new-york-nyc-2013

In our ongoing photo series What’s Outside the Window? is this image of a couple hugging on Orchard Street, as seen through the plate glass front wall of the Dressing Room Bar, in New York’s Lower East Side. The girl looks sleepy and affectionate, while the guy is checking his cellphone and seems to be texting.
