A set of stairs collapsed and seriously injured one person on April 10 at “5 Pointz,” the graffiti-covered building complex in Long Island City, Queens that has become a world-famous mecca for all types of artists, street-art fans, tourists and photographers. As a landmark, 5 Pointz is best known for the graffiti art that seems to cover almost every available square inch its walls.
Nicole Gagne, the woman injure din the accident, is one of approximately 200 hundred artists who rent studio space in the 5 Pointz building and form a community. The building has since been closed to the public while the owner makes renovations to the structure to bring it up to code.
